Which has it been for you this year?

“O Lord, how my adversaries have increased! Many are rising up against me. Many are saying of my soul, there is no deliverance for him in God.”
“O Lord, in You alone will I put my trust.”

Some of you are feeling good about your ministry and have experienced tremendous grace.
Some of you have seen exciting advancements in music, technology, and the church's worship environment.

For some 2011 has not been an easy year and you may be saying “Put 2011 in the books, lock it up and throw away the key!”

Whatever you have faced this year, know this; “The Lord is crazy about you, and there is nothing you can do to change His mind!”

If there is anything the Lord delights in it is a heart filled with the presence of Jesus. You provide opportunities every week for people to experience the very presence of the Lord. Remember what God said to Samuel when He picked David to be anointed over his brothers, “man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” God is looking for those who will worship Him in their hearts. Sometimes people in our ministry don’t see what the Lord sees.

Our job is to stay so connected to the Lord that when we pick songs, visuals, and everything that enhances the worship environment, we are not surprised when people say off-the-wall comments.

I am praying for you through this season. I know the challenges of creativity, tradition, and long hours. Let’s all trust in the everlasting God to renew our strength, vision, and joy, and to lift us up on wings like eagles so that we can see a glimpse of what He sees, His Kingdom in full glory.

Salaried/Hourly: Part-Time Salaried/Exempt

Job Summary:

The Worship Leader is responsible for teaching, training, and encouraging God’s people through worship in harmony with the purpose of Church on Mill and leadership of the Senior Pastor. The Worship Leader will assist in the implementation of the purpose and vision of the church through worship.

Expectations:

The Worship Leader will support the vision of the church by leading the worship ministry with a focus on all worship being done for the glory of God. As a church we are to teach, admonish, and encourage each other through various worship forms. Worship services are to be participatory rather than performance-oriented. Theological content of worship is to be sought over style of music and liturgy. Worship should be aimed at a wide variety of peoples, in line with the diverse membership of Church on Mill. As an individual, the Worship Leader should model worship in their personal life in accordance with biblical teaching and the purpose and vision of Church on Mill.

Essential Functions:

- Be a model of spiritual health and growth

■Growing Christian with a heart for God and God’s people.

■Christ-like character.

■Elder-qualified.

■Faithful involvement in church life.

- Prepare and lead worship services

■Work with Senior Pastor on themes in the messages to be highlighted in worship.

■Work with church staff on incorporating worship as appropriate in support of other activities.

■Direct responsibility for planning all worship service aspects except the preaching and teaching. Essential elements of worship services include:

● Lord’s supper and baptism (1 Cor 11:17-34, Acts 2:42)

● Prayer (2 Tim 2:1)

● Singing (Col 3:16, Eph 5:19)

● Giving (2 Cor 8-9)

● Scripture reading (1 Tim 4:13)

● Usage of spiritual gifts in a way that can edify believers and be evangelistically intelligible to unbelievers (1 Cor 11-14)

● Members encouraging one another (Heb 10:22-25)

● Preaching and teaching (2 Tim 4:1)

■Coordinate regular and special services as well as special events and emphasis times as they relate to worship needs.

■Oversee musical and A/V teams for rehearsal and worship services.

■Coordination and preparation of lyric and lead sheets for musicians and singers. Coordinate media aspects of services including songs, announcement slides, sermon slides, videos, and other visual aspects.

■Ensure auditorium is properly setup as an inviting place to worship God. Oversee technical and aesthetic setup of auditorium.

■Ensure legal compliance with all licensing and reporting for music and media use.

- Develop worship practices of self and team

■Attend workshops and leadership conferences at discretion of Senior Pastor

■Follow Church worship trends, read related publications, and discern what to incorporate as new songs, ideas, and practices relate to our corporate worship.

- General shepherding of church body, especially the worship team

■Regularly meet with and develop the worship ministry team and A/V ministry team to provide support, encouragement, accountability and direction.

■Lead the worship team towards having Christ-focused lives and developing character in accordance with biblical teaching.

- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Senior Pastor

The founder of the American Christian Songwriter's Association, John Hershenberg, will be at Calvary Community Church this Saturday, November 20, at 10 am for the first meeting of the Arizona Chapter of the ACSA. The meeting will be held in the north sanctuary (next to the HeBrews Coffee Shop).

Anyone interested in the ministry, art, and/or business of Christian songwriting is encouraged to attend. The meeting will be an introduction to ASCA and the benefits of membership. Those who attend on Saturday will enjoy those benefits for $15 for one year. The normal association dues are $30/year.

Some of the benefits include: access to a nationwide network of Christian songwriters and potential collaborators, monthly meetings that will highlight sharing of new music written by group members in attendance, clinics on publishing, marketing, recording, and the craft of songwriting itself, the potential rotation of member's original music on a 24/7 internet radio station, quarterly concerts featuring member's music, and much more.

Parachute Band at Calvary Community June 16

New Zealand's Parachute Band will be at Calvary Community Church in Phoenix this Wednesday evening, June 16, 7:00-8:30 pm!

The band comes from the well known Parachute Festival in New Zealand and is the house worship band for the 4 day event. Their energetic, fresh style appeals to all ages.

They have released two albums under Integrity Music, Roadmaps & Revelations, based on Psalm 119, and Technicolour, based on the idea that God's living water equals life in all its colors. Recently two of their songs were picked up by other artists. 'Mercy' has now been re-released on Casting Crowns latest album, and Lincoln Brewster has also recorded 'Living Rain'.

This year we are going to begin each morning with an hour of corporate prayer as the first main session of the day. We believe God is going to honor our starting the day on our knees and come to meet with us in an extraordinary way.

I can tell you that recently every time I've been in a prayer meeting where PrayerQuake was the focus, the Holy Spirit has been so strong, many times we are moved to tears. Other intercessors and speakers are telling us they are sensing the same thing. The impression I keep getting is that God wants to come to PrayerQuake because He knows that those who come make worshiping and focusing upon Him the main thing.

I felt impressed this morning in prayer that God is saying that He has registered for PrayerQuake. He is coming!

People often ask what makes PrayerQuake different from other conferences. After reflection I must say, that what makes PrayerQuake PrayerQuake is that it is marked by the tangible presence of God!

This year God has given us one of the best lineups of speakers we've ever had at PrayerQuake. He has truly prepared a banqueting table before us. Yet what I'm most excited about is meeting Him there! I hope you'll be there, too.

Parachute Band available for Phoenix Bookings

The Parachute Band will be coming to Phoenix June 17-18 and is available to do a Worship Night and/or lead a worship team workshop at your church.

The Parachute Band is finishing up their first Canada/US tour for the year. They have been touring the East coast playing in NY, Virginia Beach, North Carolina, Tennessee and are now approaching the West Coast. On this tour the band has lead worship at Joyce Meyer conferences with Martin Smith from the former band 'Delirious' as well as Matt Redman. The band is headlining festivals such as the 'YC Alberta Festival', 'Lifelight Festival', 'Lifefest', 'Cornerstone Festival' and 'Big Ticket Festival'.

The band comes from the well known Parachute Festival in New Zealand and is the house worship band for that event. Parachute Festival just had its 20th birthday and was host to some of the world’s best artists this year such as Underoath, Switchfoot, Hillsong United, Leeland, Family Force Five, and New World Son.

The band has released two albums under Integrity Music, with a third to be released this June. Two of their songs have been picked up by other artists. 'Mercy' has been re-released on Casting Crowns' latest album and Lincoln Brewster has also recorded 'Living Rain'.

If you are interested in having the Parachute Band minister at your church, you would need to provide meals and modest accommodations for 7 people (4x twin rooms).

There is no set performance fee, but international touring costs are covered through honorariums, so the band would be blessed with whatever amount you would offer. The band usually gets around $3k per performance, but that¹s just an indication. In order to cover the costs, the host church may charge a ticket price which usually ranges between $10 and $15 per person.

If you are on Facebook, you might want to take a look at the group "Song of the Week." Started by Doja Adun, this group "started from a heart wanting to worship God in Spirit and in Truth and yearns for every tribe and tongue to come together and worship Him, The Most High God. How it works is that a song will be suggested for the week (Sunday evening) and people can use it in their individual lives and church to worship and pray to God. And the prayer is that God will manifest His Glory and His Presence as we worship together."

So every week Group Leaders Ricky Sim or Doja Adun post a worship song and also send it to members as a Facebook message. It might be an older "standard," or a new song you've never heard before, generally congregational in nature and always Biblical and God-focused. Usually they send a link to a video including the music and lyrics. You might want to use the songs with your group or congregation, or for your individual time with the Lord.

The group membership includes worshipers and worship leaders from nations around the world. How awesome to think of "every tribe and tongue" worshiping Him in unison!

What is the Philosophy of Worship That Unites Us?

God-centeredness: A high priority of the vertical focus of our Sunday morning service. The ultimate aim is to so experience God that he is glorified in our affections.

Expecting the powerful presence of God: We do not just direct ourselves toward him. We earnestly seek his drawing near according to the promise of James 4:8. We believe that in worship God draws near to us in power, and makes himself known and felt for our good and for the salvation of unbelievers in the midst.

Bible based and Bible saturated: The content of our singing and praying and welcoming and preaching and poetry will always conform to the truth of Scripture. The content of God's Word will be woven through all we do in worship and will be the ground of all our appeal to authority.

Head and heart: Worship that aims at kindling and carrying deep, strong, real emotions toward God, but does not manipulate people's emotions by failing to appeal to clear thinking about spiritual things based on shareable evidences outside ourselves.

Earnestness and intensity: Avoiding a trite, flippant, superficial, frivolous atmosphere, but instead setting an example of reverence and passion and wonder.

Authentic communication: The utter renunciation of all sham and deceit and hypocrisy and pretense and affectation and posturing. Not the atmosphere of artistic or oratorical performance but the atmosphere of a radically personal encounter with God truth..

The manifestation of God and the common good: We expect and hope and pray (according to 1 Cor. 12:7) that our focus on the manifesting of God is good for people and that therefore a spirit of love for each other is not incompatible with, but necessary to authentic worship.

Undistracting excellence: We will try to sing and play and pray and preach in such a way that people's attention will not be diverted from the substance by shoddy ministry nor by excessive finesse, elegance or refinement. Natural, undistracting excellence will let the truth and beauty of God shine through.

The mingling of historic and contemporary music: And he said to them, "Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old" (Matt. 13:52)

"Worship is not a musical experience. Musicians, singers and worship leaders can no more create a worship experience than an evangelist can create a salvation experience. Both worship and salvation are decisions - decisions that only individuals can make."

What happens at these Worship! Arizona lunches?? Recap of our May lunch at CCV

Some of you may wonder what specifically takes place at our monthly Worship! Arizona networking lunches. So I thought I'd give a recap of our most recent lunch, held at Christ's Church of the Valley in May.

We had a group of about 25 people attending which included worship leaders, pastors, and musicians from various churches and ministries. This included those whose worship ministry is for youth, children, the homeless, and college students as well as the regular church settings. We had Worship Leaders from churches with 10,000 or so attendance as well as for small groups of under 100. Some leaders were brand new and others with up to 30 years experience.

After introductions over lunch, we had lively discussions on a variety of interesting topics and asked some challenging questions. Our first topic was the upcoming WorshipMusicTech seminar in July (click here for more info.) We talked about the need to train volunteer tech staff as well as the challenge of talking to church leaders about technology costs and needs. We also had a good explanation of how to use worship tracks for live worship leading. (These topics will also be covered in the Tech Seminar in greater detail.)

A question was asked about dealing with a complaint from a Sr. Pastor regarding a volunteer's sound skills. Advice given included taking total responsibility for issues like these and protecting volunteer team members when their skill level is not up to par with leadership's expectations.

We talked about how to shepherd new or lesser-skilled musicians over the long term and help them to grow in their gifts, particularly when playing with higher-skilled players. And how God will fill in what the team lacks.

We discussed our various views on the question:
Should we have non-believers on a worship team?
Some of the perspectives were:
--A non-believer can be brought to Christ through being on the team
--All worship team members on the platform are ministers in worship so all should be believers
--Non-believers are fine as long as they are only instrumentalists, not singers

Which brought up: What is the difference between singers/instrumentalists on the team?
--Instrumentalists are accompaniment to the singers who lead the worship using words
--Instrumentalists can lead people to worship with just music

And led to: How can we even know if our team members are really believers?
--We can't really, but go by what they say
--We can have regular conversations with team members and ask where they are in their walk with Christ

And observations were made that believers on the team can have issues, dysfunctions, and challenges too, not just the non-believers, though they'll deal with them differently.

Some cautions were noted:
--Make sure whatever you decide regarding your team and the participation of non-believers is completely in line with your church leadership
--Make sure any nonbelievers are submitted to your leadership
--Use good judgment on how many nonbelievers you might decide to have

We gathered and prayed over our host Worship Pastors and their church and ministry.

Through discussions at lunches like this one, friendships and partnerships are formed, resources are suggested, mentoring takes place, and encouragement is given. We discover the many similarities in our situations and how we can keep each other from becoming isolated. Job and ministry opportunities sometimes come about through connections made at the lunches.

Social Justice, Tim Hughes, and Worship

Recently I read a CCLI WorshipCorner post about Tim Hughes and why he wrote the song "God of Justice"

Here's an excerpt regarding the theme of social justice:

Of course there are plenty of Scriptures that support this theme, but for Hughes, the key verse was Micah 6:8, “He has showed you o man what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly, and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

“This puts everything into perspective, even songwriting,” says Hughes. “If I want to please God with the songs I write, then I need to live a life of love. As James says, ‘Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world’ (1:27). I’ve been feeling really challenged in my life about what I place priorities on. God’s heart breaks and beats for the poor, the downtrodden, the abused, the fatherless, the lonely, and the hurting. If I am not allowing my heart to feel the same sense of passion for these people then I may write a song that I love, but in God’s ears it will be an unpleasant sound. He’ll be looking down saying, ‘spare me Tim.’
“I’m trying to learn what it means to love the poor, and, to be honest, at the moment I’m way off. But I’m on a journey—God is gracious, but the call is overwhelmingly clear.

Action is certainly the most important part of leading, especially if you want to encourage your congregation to get out and heed God’s call to act justly. However, worship leaders also have a distinct opportunity to speak into people’s hearts and minds in an intimate way. “We have a responsibility as worship leaders,” explains Hughes. “The songs we sing on a Sunday can have a huge impact in people’s journey of faith. In many ways it’s the songs we sing that mold and shape people’s theology. So let’s engage with these issues and let’s find songs that speak about these themes. Good Morning,

Did you ever wonder why you are doing what you’re doing?

Worship! Arizona exists to be that help. Not through formal training so much but through network resourcing and encouragement. When we get together, tell our stories, and ask hard questions, we believe that for the most part, the answers are in the room.

In John 20:21, Jesus told his disciples this: “As the Father has send me, so I am sending you.” So we have all the resources that Jesus had. We just need each other (Eccl.4:9-12; Heb. 10:24-25) to bring them out.

The Prodigal's Home

The Prodigal's Home is a ministry to the homeless and poor here in Phoenx. They hold an outdoor church service which includes breakfast, worship, a brief message, and communion every Saturday morning. This is a real church that ministers love, hope, belonging, and a sense of family while serving the needs of this particular group. During the week they provide meals for the needy as well. I have been fortunate to serve in worship with them and thought you might want to check them out.

They put out a weekly newsletter and have a website. Or come by Crossroads United Methodist Church at 7901 N Central Ave, Phoenix AZ on Saturday mornings from 8:00-9:30.

Good Morning,

How do you hear God speaking to you?

Some people say they hear God’s voice when they are playing an instrument, or reading their Bible, listening to music, driving, looking at a mountain, lake, ocean, forest, or some other aspect of creation. Some people need absolute quiet, and others need to be around people.

One thing we can depend on is Jesus' promise that the Holy Spirit is in us, guiding us to the truth, reminding us of what Jesus has said to us, and being our peace in every situation no matter the dynamic of relationship or circumstance. He is our peace!

He is your peace today--can you hear His voice speaking to you?

Crazy Love for Jesus for President!?

I'm in the process of reading 2 books that I find to be challenging and provoking me toward a deeper focus on God's Word in how I respond to the world and follow Him in worship ministry.

These are NOT books to read if you want to stay comfortable or remain in the status quo!

But then Jesus never asked us to stay comfortable and follow Him, did He?

The book Crazy Love : Overwhelmed by a Relentless God by Francis Chan has chapter titles such as "Profile of a Lukewarm Church" and "Serving Leftovers to a Holy God." Chan challenges the church in America to look at ourselves and honestly identify where we are not obsessed with God, but rather giving Him only a brush of our time while giving the rest of our time to pursuing control, safety, and an absence of suffering. He challenges us by asking why, when a Christian radically obeys God, is it often other Christians who criticize or condemn their choices?

Chan says: "Sometimes I feel like when I make decisions that are remotely biblical, people who call themselves Christians are the first to criticize and say I'm crazy, that I'm taking the Bible too literally, or that I'm not thinking about my family's well-being. . . When people gladly sacrifice their time or comfort or home, it is obvious that they trust in the promises of God. Why is it that the story of someone who has actually done what Jesus commands resonates deeply with us, but we then assume we could never do anything so radical or intense? Or why do we call it radical when, to Jesus, it is simply the way it is? The way it should be?"

The second book I'm reading is Jesus for President : Politics for Ordinary Radicals by Shane Claiborne and Chris Haw. This book came out for the election year, and gives an insightful look at the Bible and what it says about socioeconomics and politics, and how we as a church should respond to them as a "peculiar people" who are set apart for Christ.

The authors ask radical questions, and give radical assertions:
"Rather than placing our hope in a transitional church that embodies God's kingdom, we assume America is God's hope for the world, even when it doesn't look like Christ." You may not agree with their challenges but they will most likely make you think and see a Biblical Jesus. The book's design is radical too with photos and graphics throughout.

A safe place to talk, a great place to connect

Our Worship!AZ lunch last Thursday included a great group of worship leaders and pastors. Many of the people there shared how they came to know Christ, and then came to be called as worship leaders. It's great having a place to talk about what we do as worship leaders with people who understand what we are talking about! Old friends caught up with each other, and those new to Worship Ministry made new connections. We minister at different churches, in different denominations, in different styles, and to varying sizes of congregations. But we have in common our calling by Christ to be his instruments to lead His people to worship Him, know Him, and encounter Him.

We also had a senior pastor come to the meeting. We welcome pastors to sit in and see what worship leaders are about!

It was a great lunch! Looking forward to the next one, the third Thursday in February. Check back for location!

A note from JJ Heller regarding new song!

If you're reading this, it's because my husband, Dave, and I have visited your church in the past, or we've heard good things about your music ministry. We're excited to let you know that last week we had a chance to record a new worship song that we co-wrote with a gifted songwriter from TX named Jennie Lee Riddle. Jennie wrote a song called "Revelation Song" that is sung corporately by churches across America.

The new song, "MY SAVIOR'S LOVE ENDURES (MAGNIFICAT)," is a paraphrase of Mary's Magnificat from the first chapter of Luke. We're hoping that this song will be a great encouragement to the church, and we'd love for you to sing it with your congregation (perhaps even this Christmas season).

The mountaintop worship experience vs. Sunday morning

Thursday we had our worship leader networking lunch at Desert Springs Church in their serene prayer garden. We shared our experiences with leading worship at retreats and how people tend to go deeper with God in worship at them.

In our discussion we thought of possible reasons for this experience:
What we do as worship leaders is simpler and less planned out
People come prepared for an experience with God
Women feel more open w/women -- men with men
People feel safer being vulnerable
The mountaintop experience
Fewer distractions
Worship combined with deeper teachings
Casual and non pretentious

We then discussed how to lead people to that experience in a Sunday morning setting. Is it even possible?
Ideas included:
Know your congregation: churched? new believers? traditionalists? nonbelivers?
Partner with your pastor in planning
Teach them who God is
Build trust
Model worship
Build trust with worship team

His representatives in every relationship, circumstance, and event we face every day. (John 20:21) We have been sent by Jesus just as Jesus was sent by God!

So today enjoy the freedom of walking worthy. You’re already there!

Future Worship! Arizona events being planned, next Worship Leader Lunch

We thank Robin Blue for hosting our October lunch at Abundant Life. Robin took me on a tour of the church and it was exciting to see all that is going on there.

At the lunch, those present began brainstorming about some possible Worship!Arizona events in the future, including a Worship Conference in the Spring and a "Dawn to Dusk" Worship Gathering of 12 back-to-back worship teams in central Phx. next Fall. We also discussed the possibility of a mission trip to Africa. Marriage and Worship

Good Morning,

I just married off my son last weekend and of course I see worship in everything. So I related intimacy with God in worship to the marriage relationship.

John 4:24 speaks of the relational dynamics between us and God in the act of worshipping God, (knowing God through spiritual listening and responding in honesty and truth). The same dynamics apply to the marriage relationship.

Knowing your spouse requires listening and study so that your response can be honest and have the greatest results. So study well and bless your spouse!

Should we evaluate our congregation's worship?

Today we had our worship leader lunch hosted by Mike Bohlman at Desert View Bible Church. After discussing what was new at everyone's respective churches, we noticed a trend in what God is doing -- renewal brought about through repentance and pointing to revival!

We also discussed how to balance the technical, production, and planning aspects of worship leading with the reliance on the Holy Spirit's leading. We want to use our God-given gifts as worship leaders, but we want to hear from God and have Him be the focus of what we do. We also made note of the common human tendency to evaluate our congregation's worship (does clapping mean they're worshiping? do blank faces mean they're not?), when in actuality only God knows what is going on in the hearts of the people. We tend to want to know if we "did well" or that our time on the platform matters. But people are wired differently, even using different senses or preferences such as mind, body, heart, nature as they connect with God.

Books we are reading which are leading us to deeper questions on the matter are: Sacred Pathways, Red Moon Rising, and The Shack.

Jeff Merry talked about his experience in the Congo with Mending the Soul ministries. For more information on what is going on in the Congo, check out the Congo Initiative website. Jeff now has a burden to do a worship leader conference there in July 2009, bringing a group of worship leaders to minister to and train worship leaders. He ask those present to think and pray about being a part of this vision.

Jeff is also planning a local worship leader conference, perhaps in the early spring, using our own local worship leaders as teachers, trainers, musicians, etc. So there are a lot of new opportunities coming up this year!

Worship! Arizona lunches are the third Thursday of every month at different churches around in the Phoenix area. All worship pastors/leaders and those involved in worship ministry are invited to attend!

Daniel is a gifted worship and prayer leader who has shepherded the body of Christ in the metro Phoenix area into the Lord's Presence for many, many years. Now living in Kansas City, he is back in the Valley for a brief visit and will be leading this community worship and prayer evening at:

Open Door Fellowship, 8301 N. 19th Avenue in Phoenix on Sunday night, September 14th, at 7 pm.

This is also an opportunity for worship and prayer leaders to see how to incorporate both those elements into a corporate time in the Lord's Presence. These are challenging times, but we have an amazing God!

Tomorrow morning I leave for Africa. Thank you to all who have and are praying for me and our team. (if you would like an on going update please send a request to my wife at: Kmerry@cox.net)

Thank you also for giving. We raised the $5000 and a guitar to take as well!

I asked everyone on our Africa team to find an anchor verse for the trip. Here's mine:

"Lord that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory,
And that Your hand would be with me,
And that You would keep me from evil that it might not pain me!"
And God granted him what he requested. 1 Chronicles 4:10

"Lord bless me", means that I am surrendering to His will what ever His plans are for me. I'm diving in like the Steven Curtis Chapman song:

I'm diving in, I'm going deep
In over my head I want to be
Caught in the rush lost in the flow
In over my head I want to go
The river's deep, the river's wide
The river's water is alive.
So sink or swim I'm diving in.

There is a supernatural power,
In this mighty River's flow,

But we will never know the awesome power
of the grace of God
Until we let ourselves get swept away

"Enlarge my territory", means Lord, use me to take more ground for Your honor and glory.

"That Your hand would be with me", means Father, empower me by Your spirit.

"Keep me from evil", means protect me from the enemy's plans to steal, kill, and destroy me and the ministry Christ has planned through me.
